Hair Loss & Thinning Solutions

Welcome to your Dense Era

More hair in the drain than on your head? This is where it stops.

Hair loss is not one thing. Telogen effluvium, androgenetic thinning, and breakage all look the same in the shower drain — but they respond to completely different treatments. In Metro Vancouver's damp coastal climate, hormonal shifts, medication changes, and stress hit hair health harder — and generic drugstore solutions rarely cut it. In 40 years of professional haircare across Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey, and Langley, the most common mistake we see is treating the wrong root cause. The right diagnosis changes everything. That is what this hub is built for.

Expert guidance from Milajne, Founder & President of Zennkai — professional hair care across Metro Vancouver since 1984.

The Ultimate Anti-Hair Fall System

Powered by Aminexil — the clinical-concentration follicle-anchoring active developed by L'Oréal Research — Genesis works at the root of the problem, not the surface. The complete in-shower system is built around a 6-week protocol used by professional stylists across Metro Vancouver to stop shedding before it accelerates.

Drugstore vs Professional — The Difference

Drugstore "anti-thinning" shampoos use the same active ingredients as professional formulas — at lower concentrations, with stripping surfactants, and without the diagnostic precision that makes them work. The reason a drugstore biotin shampoo doesn't reverse thinning isn't that biotin doesn't work topically (it largely doesn't). It's that the shampoo isn't built around a mechanism. Kérastase Genesis delivers Aminexil at clinical concentration in a complete in-shower system. Nioxin's six-system range is calibrated to specific hair types and stages of thinning. The difference between a routine that responds in 6 weeks and one that doesn't respond at all is concentration, formulation chemistry, and matching the active to the cause.

IT'S JUST A PHASE

PHASE 1

Stop the Fall

Every routine starts at the scalp. Phase 1 products target the follicle directly — calming the trigger, re-anchoring weakened roots, and stopping the shed before it accelerates. Aminexil (Kérastase Spécifique Stimuliste) prevents the collagen fibres around the follicle from becoming rigid, extending the active growth phase. Nioxin's cleansing system removes DHT-laden sebum that compromises follicle function. Expected timeline: reduced shedding visible at week 2 to 4 with consistent use. This phase typically runs 6 weeks before transitioning to Phase 2.

PHASE 2

Support Regrowth

Once shedding slows, your scalp needs to become a place new hair wants to stay. Stimulating treatments and density-building formulas create the environment your follicles need. Stemoxydine (Kérastase) activates dormant follicles by mimicking low-oxygen scalp conditions — the same conditions that trigger anagen entry biologically. Caffeine and Niacinamide (Nioxin Scalp Recovery) increase microcirculation and strengthen the follicle environment. Expected timeline: visible regrowth at week 6 to 12, with finer baby hairs emerging first along the part line and crown.

PHASE 3

Protect What's Growing

New growth is vulnerable. Hair that regrows after a shed is finer, more porous, and more prone to breakage than mature hair. Without bond support, you can lose the regrowth to breakage before it reaches visible length. K18PEPTIDE™ rebuilds disulfide bonds inside the cortex. Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate uses Citric Acid to seal the cuticle. This is where your Dense Era meets your Repair Era — keeping every strand strong. Expected timeline: ongoing maintenance from week 12 forward, integrated into long-term routine.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hair Loss

What causes hair loss in women?

The most common causes of hair loss in women are hormonal shifts (perimenopause, postpartum, thyroid), medication side effects (GLP-1 drugs, certain antidepressants, hormonal birth control changes), telogen effluvium triggered by stress or illness, age-related follicle miniaturization, and breakage from chemical damage. Each cause requires a different treatment. A drugstore "anti-thinning" shampoo cannot diagnose which one you have — and the wrong active makes the wrong cause measurably worse. Diagnosing the cause first is the difference between a routine that works in 6 weeks and one that does not work at all.

How is GLP-1 hair loss different from other hair loss?

GLP-1 medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro cause rapid weight loss, which triggers telogen effluvium — a sudden shift of follicles from growth phase to shedding phase 2 to 4 months after starting the medication. The hair loss is reversible. The medication itself is not the cause; the rapid nutritional and metabolic shift is. Treatment focuses on supporting follicle anchoring (Aminexil), nutritional support, and protein adequacy. Hair typically returns to baseline 6 to 9 months after the body stabilizes at the new metabolic set point. Stopping the medication is rarely necessary — the routine compensates.

Does stress shedding grow back?

Yes. Stress-induced telogen effluvium is reversible in the vast majority of cases. The trigger is typically a major life event, illness, or sustained stress 2 to 3 months before the shedding starts — the timing lag is why people often don't connect the cause to the effect. Once the trigger passes, follicles return to normal cycling. Visible regrowth typically begins at 3 months and reaches normal density by 9 to 12 months. Supportive products like Kérastase Spécifique Stimuliste with Aminexil shorten the recovery timeline by extending the anagen growth phase so emerging hair stays on the head longer.

What is the difference between hair loss and hair breakage?

Hair loss is when hair falls from the follicle with the white bulb (root) attached — the follicle has shed the strand. Hair breakage is when hair snaps along the shaft, with no bulb. Loss requires follicle-level treatment (Aminexil, Stemoxydine, Nioxin system). Breakage requires bond-repair treatment (K18, Olaplex, Redken Extreme Lengths). Treating breakage as loss does nothing for the underlying problem, and treating loss as breakage misses the follicle work entirely. Look at what falls out: bulb means loss, no bulb means breakage. Both can happen simultaneously, which is why Phase 3 of a complete routine includes both.

Can perimenopause cause hair thinning?

Yes. Declining estrogen during perimenopause shifts the relative balance of androgens, which can drive follicle miniaturization at the crown and part line — the same pattern as androgenetic thinning. The hair becomes finer, regrowth is slower, and overall density decreases gradually rather than in a sudden shed. Treatment combines follicle-stimulating ingredients (Stemoxydine, Caffeine), scalp environment optimization (Nioxin), and bond support for the finer regrowth that emerges. Results take 12 weeks to become visible. Hormone replacement therapy decisions are between you and your physician — but the topical routine works alongside whatever path you choose.

How long does it take to regrow hair after a shedding event?

For telogen effluvium (stress, postpartum, GLP-1, illness): visible regrowth begins at 3 months, full density returns at 9 to 12 months. For androgenetic or hormonal thinning: density improvements with consistent treatment are visible at 12 weeks, with continued improvement over 6 to 12 months. Hair grows approximately half an inch per month, so even after the follicle resumes growth, length recovery takes additional time. Consistency matters more than aggression — daily use of the right products beats sporadic use of stronger ones. Stopping a routine before week 12 is the most common reason people conclude treatments "don't work" when they would have.

What is Aminexil and how does it work?

Aminexil is a molecule developed by L'Oréal Research that prevents the collagen fibre around the follicle from becoming rigid. Rigid collagen weakens the follicle's mechanical anchoring in the scalp, causing hair to fall out before it has fully grown. Aminexil keeps the collagen flexible, extending the anagen growth phase so hair stays in the active growth state longer. It is found in Kérastase Spécifique Stimuliste. It is not a DHT blocker — it works on follicle anchoring, which is a distinct mechanism from DHT-related thinning. Apply every other day for 6 weeks initially, then maintenance.

Does Vancouver's hard water contribute to hair loss?

Hard water does not directly cause hair loss but can compound it. Calcium and magnesium from Metro Vancouver tap water deposit on the scalp and hair shaft with every wash. On the scalp, mineral buildup contributes to congestion that blocks follicle function. On the hair shaft, the deposits make existing hair more brittle and prone to breakage that can be mistaken for loss. If your hair loss started or worsened after moving to a hard water region, address mineral buildup with a chelating treatment like Kérastase Première before assuming the underlying problem is follicle-level. Our Hard Water Hair Damage hub covers the full chelation protocol.
