Lets start off by finding out WHAT spf is anyways?
S: SUN P: Protection F: Factor
Sunscreen is a barrier that protects your skin from UV rays. The UV rays that affect the skin are broken down into TWO types. Have you heard the term "Broad Spectrum"? This term, Broad Spectrum aids in blocking BOTH UV rays! Here is the breakdown...The Sunlight that reaches us are broken down to two harmful rays such as:
Ultraviolet A(UVA) has a longer wavelength, and is associated with skin aging.
This ray allows us to TAN. A tan is simply our skins defense mechanism against future damage...
Can penetrate through windows/glass AND some clouds.
UVA rays can be more intense due to reflection off the clouds
There is no such thing as a healthy or safe tan. Exposure of UVA radiation contributes to skin cancer
UVA is the main type of light in tanning beds
Penetrates more deeply into the skin than UVB
Ultraviolet B (UVB) has a shorter wavelength and is associated with skin burning.
This ray effects the surface layer of our skin, the layer thatburns
UVB rays can be filtered, and do not penetrate through windows/glass
Directly damage DNA cells
Contribute to premature skin aging
The SPF Number
According the the skin cancer foundation, "The SPF number tells you how long the sun's UV radiation would take to redden your skin when using the product exactly as directed versus the amount of time without any sunscreen...An SPF 30 allows about 3 percent of UVB rays to hit your skin. An SPF of 50 allows about 2 percent of those rays through" Re-application is crucial, for maximum protection against UV rays!
When SPF is not applied
Not having protection on the skin against UVA + UVB rays, damages our skins DNA cells that can eventually lead to skin cancer. UV exposure that leads to a sunburn has proven to play a crucial role in developing Melanoma. Which is the most dangerous of the three common types of skin cancer. Our skin goes into emergency/protective mode by forming a tan. Overtime as we develop a protective tan, our skin gets thicker. When we burn, our skin is already damaged which can result in skin diseases, premature aging, dry skin, sun spots, new moles, and many more damaging effects to our skin. The damage from UV radiation goes beyond the skin and weakens our immune system effecting our bodies ability to fight against bacteria. When in doubt...cover up!
Common Myths about SPF
"A base tan protects you"
-False.No tan is a safe tan. A tan, is our bodies response to protecting against future damage
"I have dark skin, I don't need to worry"
-"...darker people naturally produce more melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color, and the more melanin you have, the fewer UV rays penetrate your skin" -says Amy Wechsler, M.D., a dermatologist based in New York City
"I need the sun to get Vitamin D"
-That is correct. However, you need much less time in the sun to get the recommended dose of Vitamin D than you think... 15 min in the sunlight is plenty to receive a daily dose of amount of Vitamin D.
"My sunscreen is waterproof, so i only have to apply it once"
-False, regardless if the product is waterproof or not, sunscreen only lasts 1-2 hours and needs to be re-applied.
"I dont need sunscreen if its cloudy"
-False. "Clouds are simply water vapor. They can’t protect you from UV rays." -Sapna Patel, M.D. Simple enough for the UV rays to reflect off the clouds, or be enhanced by the clouds.
Steps to get the full protection you need
