Purple Shampoo - What do you need to know?

Purple Shampoo - What do you need to know?

We all know that you blonde babes struggle sometimes with keeping your color fresh in between salon appointments. It’s definitely an ongoing conflict of brassy tones and fading color. Trust me…we know the struggle is real. If you didn’t already know, purple shampoo is and will always be your best friend! The magic of purple shampoo is it keeps your ashy tones at bay and those brassy tones away…(Definitely did not rhyme on purpose but that’s pretty catchy!)

Okay so let’s get into the basics of what a purple shampoo is and how it works. Purple shampoo is just that – a shampoo with purple pigment to tone down yellowness and brassiness. It’s basically your at home toner to keep your color vibrant and beautiful! If we want to get a little technical with how it works,  we need to take a look at the color wheel:

Color Wheel

See how yellow is directly across purple? Because it’s on the opposite side of the color wheel, they cancel each other out! When you use a purple shampoo regularly it tones down your yellow tones, eliminates brassiness and creates a more cool-toned shade. Basically, if your hair is lightened (blonde, platinum, grey or silver, very light brown… you get it) then purple shampoo should be your best friend if it isn't already! Sorry brunettes, purple shampoo won’t do too much for you unless you have some blonde highlights or balayage. If you do then by all means grab your favorite purple shampoo and get shampooing!

Before we get into some our favorites, we should mention how often you should be using purple shampoo. Because it works basically like a toner but in a shampoo, it’s going to be quite drying for the hair. We recommend using a purple shampoo once or twice a week at most! Aside from drying the hair out, if you use too much or use it too often, your hair can visually become darker or even start looking violet if too much yellow is being cancelled out. Yes, there is such a thing as too much purple shampoo.
