We always speak about the importance of drinking water to make sure our body stays hydrated. The same rule applies to your hair! Having moisture in your hair is essential to keeping it healthy and vibrant. To some, the idea of adding moisture scares them just because they think they’re adding unnecessary grease and oil into the hair. We can add that to the list of crazy hair myths and show you why, when and how to moisturize. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered!
Why Is Moisture So Important?
Well let’s just start off by saying that our hair is just like our skin. When it comes to our skin we’re taught to put on SPF, exfoliate, and receive monthly facials. With that being said, our hair needs just the same amount of maintenance. Without the proper moisturizing products, dehydration can be our hairs worst nightmare. Have you ever wondered why you have split ends? Or why you have breakage? Well that’s all due to the lack of moisture in your hair. You wouldn’t dare to leave the house without any SPF on your face, so why do the same for your hair?
When To Moisturize…
Now that we’ve got “why” covered, let’s get into when to moisturize! As the seasons change so does the temperature, and unfortunately this can effect our hairs natural moisture. We’re not saying that you need to have different products for each season but to simply invest in a basic hydrating shampoo and conditioner that will work for your hair type for year-round use. We find that as we transition into the fall season and say farewell to summer, that this is the time our hair craves hydration the most. During this transition, we do recommend to hydrate your hair weekly! Whether it be a mask or a basic shampoo and conditioner...your hair will thank you in the end!
How To Moisturize!
Last but definitely not least, how to moisturize your hair! Now we’re super aware that not everyone has the same hair types, we’re going to go through the in’s and out’s of fine hair types and medium to thick hair types:
The rule with fine hair is to moisturize without weighing it down. First things first - find a conditioner that is made specifically for fine hair. We love Pureology Hydrate Sheer Conditioner. Pureology is an all vegan brand; meaning because it cuts out any silicones in the ingredients, it will not create a heavy coating on the hair nor will it produce any build up. This is a perfect conditioner for lightweight moisture and shine! Our second tip is to make sure you are not applying conditioner to the roots. Fine hair is usually the most dry on the ends, so make sure to focus on the driest parts and skip the roots to avoid heaviness. Now if you’re really worried about adding too much moisture, you can skip the conditioner in the shower and just go straight to a leave in conditioner. What we recommend for this is also from Pureology - the Color Fanatic Spray. 21 benefits all in one! This should give you the right amount of hydration without being too heavy, plus all the other added benefits in this awesome product!
Medium to thick hair can give us a little bit of attitude sometimes - regular hydration is what this diva need!. Although it may seem like a lot of work, all you need is the proper hydrating products in your beauty routine. This should include: a hydrating shampoo and conditioner for every wash, a hydrating mask… and if you feel like your hair needs it; you can go the extra mile and also use a leave in conditioner. Using a hydrating shampoo and conditioner will help your hair get a richer cleanse more frequently (which your hair will literally drink up anyway!). Also, make sure to alternate your regular conditioner with your favorite mask or deep treatment so your hair can absorb all of that moisture goodness! If your hair is super dry and itching for moisture, leave that sucker on for 20 extra minutes before rinsing! Now let’s get into our recommended products for all you medium to thick haired beauties!
- Hydrating shampoo and conditioner: Pureology Hydrate
- Deep treatment: Loma Deep Conditioner
- Leave-In Conditioner - Devacurl Decadence Leave-In Conditioner
Now that we’re all educated on hydration and why it’s so important, I think it’s safe to say that you’re probably headed over to your closest Zennkai and stocking up on all these products (I mean we hope you are anyways!). If not, you’re forgiven… you can shop online instead! All silliness aside, every hair type needs hydration. Moisturizing frequently ensures that your hair stays radiant and healthy just like it always should be! Remember, hydrated hair is happy hair!
