Which Nioxin System Should You Use?

expert guidance from milajne, founder & president of zennkai — professional hair care across metro vancouver since 1984.

Nioxin recently simplified its numbered kits from six down to four — so if you're staring at old advice for "System 5" or "System 6," it's out of date. Here's the current lineup, how to pick your kit in two questions, and the daily serum that layers on top.

How Nioxin Works

Every Nioxin kit is a three-step routine — shampoo, conditioner, and a leave-on scalp treatment — built around the same idea: clear the scalp so the follicle can perform. The core actives are Niacinamide (vitamin B3, to nourish the root), Caffeine and Biotin (to support the follicle), and Salicylic Acid in the cleansers to lift the sebum and buildup that clog follicle openings. It's a scalp-first approach — and worth noting for Metro Vancouver, where hard-water mineral buildup adds to that congestion, keeping the scalp clear matters even more.

PICK YOUR SYSTEM

Title

The four systems map onto two simple questions — your hair type, and how far the thinning has progressed. Answer both and you land on your number.

1 · YOUR HAIR TYPE
Natural & untreated, or coloured/chemically treated/dry?

2 · YOUR THINNING STAGE
Light (early, not obvious to others), or progressed (more scalp visible)?

Natural hair · Light thinning

System 1

For natural, untreated hair in the early stages of thinning. Amplifies texture, protects against breakage, refreshes the scalp.

Choose if: your hair has never been coloured or chemically treated, and thinning is just starting.

SHOP SYSTEM 1

Natural hair · Progressed thinning

System 2

For natural, untreated hair with progressed thinning — more noticeable loss of fullness. Same three-step system, stepped up.

Choose if: your hair is uncoloured and the thinning has become noticeable to you or others.

SHOP SYSTEM 2

Treated hair · Light thinning

System 3

For coloured, chemically treated or dry hair with light thinning. Gentler on processed strands while still clearing the scalp.

Choose if: your hair is coloured, bleached, permed or dry, and thinning is early. (This replaces the old System 5.)

SHOP SYSTEM 3

Treated hair · Progressed thinning

System 4

For coloured, chemically treated or dry hair with progressed thinning. The most supportive kit for processed, thinning hair.

Choose if: your hair is treated and the thinning is noticeable. (This replaces the old System 6.)

SHOP SYSTEM 4

The daily add-on

Ultimate Power Hair Fall Defense Serum

A leave-on scalp serum that layers on top of any kit. Its hero active is SANDALORE™ — a molecule Nioxin uses to support follicle stimulation and hair anchorage — alongside caffeine, lauric acid and niacinamide. Nioxin reports 93% of users saw less hair in the brush and 91% improved hair anchorage in an 8-week study. It's a hair-fall and strength treatment, not a regrowth product.

Add if: you want a daily leave-on step targeting hair fall and strength, on top of your three-step kit.

FAQ

Which Nioxin system should I use?

Answer two questions. First, is your hair natural (never coloured or chemically treated) or is it coloured, bleached, permed or dry? Second, is your thinning light (just starting) or progressed (noticeably less full)? Natural hair uses Kit 1 for light thinning and Kit 2 for progressed; treated hair uses Kit 3 for light thinning and Kit 4 for progressed. Each kit is a three-step shampoo, conditioner and scalp treatment.

What happened to Nioxin System 5 and 6?

Nioxin consolidated its lineup from six kits down to four. If you used to use System 5, the current equivalent is System Kit 3; if you used System 6, it's now System Kit 4. Both old kits were for chemically treated hair, and the new Kits 3 and 4 cover coloured, bleached and dry hair by thinning stage. Any older guide still referencing Systems 5 or 6 is out of date.

What's the difference between Nioxin System 1 and 2?

Both are for natural, untreated hair — the difference is how far the thinning has progressed. System Kit 1 is for light, early-stage thinning that isn't very noticeable to others yet. System Kit 2 is for progressed thinning, where you can see more scalp and fullness feels reduced. Same three-step approach and core actives; Kit 2 is the step up for more advanced natural-hair thinning.

Which Nioxin is best for coloured or chemically treated hair?

Kits 3 and 4 are formulated for coloured, bleached, permed or dry hair — gentler on processed strands while still clearing the scalp. Choose Kit 3 for light, early thinning and Kit 4 for progressed thinning. If you previously used System 5 or 6 for chemically treated hair, these are your current equivalents (5 becomes 3, 6 becomes 4).

What does the Ultimate Power Hair Fall Defense Serum do?

It's a daily leave-on scalp serum that layers on top of any Nioxin kit. Its hero active is SANDALORE™, which Nioxin uses to support follicle stimulation and hair anchorage, alongside caffeine, lauric acid and niacinamide. In Nioxin's 8-week study, 93% of users noticed less hair in the brush and 91% reported improved hair anchorage. It targets hair fall and strength — it's not a regrowth product.

How long does Nioxin take to work?

Most people notice scalp and texture improvements within two to four weeks of consistent use, with measurable density changes typically appearing over 30 to 90 days. Nioxin works best with daily use of the complete three-step system. A note: some users see extra shedding in the first few weeks as the scalp clears — this is expected as clogged follicles release hairs already at the end of their cycle.

Is Nioxin dermatologist recommended, and does it actually work?

Nioxin is clinically and dermatologically tested, and the brand reports 85% of users noticed a thickening effect. It works by clearing sebum and buildup so follicles sit in a healthier environment, while niacinamide, caffeine and biotin nourish the root. Expect thicker, fuller-looking hair over 30 to 90 days of consistent use. It's not a regrowth product — it's a scalp-and-strand system that improves density and reduces breakage.

Which Nioxin is best for women's thinning hair?

Nioxin suits thinning hair in women from many causes — hormonal changes, postpartum, ageing, stress or medication — because it targets the scalp environment rather than any single cause. Choose your kit by hair type and thinning stage: Kit 1 or 2 for natural, untreated hair (light then progressed), Kit 3 or 4 for coloured or treated hair. Add the Ultimate Power serum for a daily leave-on step targeting hair fall.

Which Nioxin is best for stress-related or postpartum thinning?

Stress, postpartum hormones and medication can all trigger temporary thinning, and Nioxin supports the scalp through it — keeping follicles clear and nourished with niacinamide, caffeine and biotin. Match your kit to your hair type and thinning stage as above. If your shedding started after a specific trigger like childbirth, illness or stress, it's worth understanding the cause too — our hair loss & thinning guide covers the routine for each.

Does Nioxin cause more shedding at first?

Some people notice more shedding in the first few weeks of using Nioxin — this is expected and temporary. As the system clears sebum and buildup from the scalp, follicles release hairs that were already at the end of their growth cycle and due to fall. It isn't causing hair loss; it's clearing hairs that would have shed anyway. Shedding typically settles within a few weeks as the scalp adjusts.
