Which Kérastase Range Is Right for You?

expert guidance from milajne, founder & president of zennkai — professional hair care across metro vancouver since 1984.

Kérastase makes a dedicated range for almost every hair concern — which is exactly why it gets confusing. Each one is built around a different active and a different job. Here's the plain-language map: find your concern, and we'll point you to the range built for it (and the hero ingredient that makes it work).

FIND YOUR CONCERN

Title

Dryness · Nourishment

Irisome complex (from Iris rhizome) + Royal Jelly and nourishing proteins.

Use if: your hair feels dry, dull or starved of moisture, without major structural damage.

DRY & ROUGH HAIR

Damage · Breakage

Vita-Ciment® Complex — Pro-Keratin + Ceramide + Resurrection sap.

Use if: hair is weak, brittle, splitting or over-processed. (Extentioniste for length; Thérapiste for severe damage.)

DAMAGE & REPAIR

Colour-treated

Restoring acid care — lactic, tartaric and amino acids + Centella Asiatica.

Use if: your colour fades, dulls or feels damaged from colouring.

COLOUR-TREATED

Curly · Coily

Hyaluronic Acid + Edelweiss flower + Ultra-Violet anti-brass pigments.

Use if: you're blonde, highlighted, bleached or grey and fighting brassiness or dryness.

BLONDE & BLEACHED

Dullness · Shine

Glyco-Keratine complex for a lightweight, mirror-shine finish without weigh-down.

Use if: your hair lacks shine and feels dull, but you want a lighter formula than Elixir Ultime's oil-based system

GLASS HAIR

Curly · Coily

Manoi Oil + Ceramide + Pro-Keratin for definition and moisture.

Use if: you have waves, curls or coils that need hydration and definition.

CURLY & COILY

Frizz · Smoothing

Morpho-Kératine — smooths and aligns the cuticle for humidity control.

Use if: hair is unruly, rough or frizz-prone, especially in damp coastal weather.

FRIZZY HAIR

Thinning · Hair Fall

Aminexil (anti-fall) and Stemoxydine (density). Three serums, three jobs.

Use if: you're seeing shedding, weakening or reduced density. The serums get confusing — see the guide below.

HAIR LOSS & THINNING

Mature Hair · Anti-Aging

Abyssine + Vegetal Concentrate, with Citrus Aurantium and Camellia extracts for revitalization.

Use if: hair is mature, thinning with age, or losing density and vitality over time — a luxury, full-ritual range covering both hair and scalp longevity.

ANTI-AGING

Hard Water · Buildup

Citric Acid — decalcifies mineral buildup that dulls and weakens hair.

Use if: hair feels coated, dull or rough and you're in a hard-water area like Metro Vancouver.

HARD WATER DAMAGE

Scalp · Oily · Sensitive

Balancing actives — Divalent for oily roots, Dermo-Calm for sensitive scalps.

Use if: your scalp is oily, reactive or out of balance.

SCALP HEALTH

Dullness · Shine

Oleo-Complex of Argan, Camellia, Maize and Pracaxi oils.

Use if: your hair is healthy but lacks shine, or you want a finishing oil.

GLASS HAIR

DANDRUFF

Piroctone Olamine + Bifidus + Salicylic Acid for flaking.

Use if: you have visible flakes — oily or dry dandruff.

SCALP HEALTH

Choosing between the scalp & density serums?

Initialiste · Genesis · Densifique · Stimuliste

Kérastase's serums are where the range gets most confusing — four of them sit close together, and they do genuinely different things (strengthening vs anti-fall vs density vs scalp). Rather than repeat it here, we built a dedicated side-by-side that breaks down exactly which serum does what and who each is for.

Can you mix ranges?

Title

Yes — and most people should. Kérastase is built to be layered by concern, not by buying one range end to end. A common pattern: treat your headline concern with its dedicated range (say, Résistance for damage), and borrow a targeted step from another (a Première decalcifying treatment if you're in hard water, or an Elixir Ultime oil to finish). The diagnostic question is always the same: what's the one concern your routine should lead with? Start there, then add. If you're unsure, that's exactly what a free in-store consultation is for.

FAQ

Which Kérastase range is best for frizzy hair?

For frizz and smoothing, the Kérastase Discipline range is the one to reach for. It's built around Morpho-Kératine, which smooths and aligns the cuticle to control rebellious texture and resist humidity — useful in damp coastal climates. If your frizz is mainly from damage rather than texture, pair it with Résistance for repair first, then maintain with Discipline.

Which Kérastase range is best for damaged hair?

Résistance is Kérastase's damage-repair range, built on the Vita-Ciment® Complex — Pro-Keratin and Ceramide that rebuild and fortify weak, brittle or over-processed hair. Within it, Extentioniste targets length and breakage, and Thérapiste handles severe damage. If your "damage" is actually mineral buildup from hard water, Première (citric acid decalcifier) addresses that first.

Which Kérastase is best for colour-treated hair?

Chroma Absolu is the dedicated colour range, using restoring acid care — lactic, tartaric and amino acids plus Centella Asiatica — to repair colour damage and prevent fade. If you're blonde, highlighted or bleached, Blond Absolu is the better fit, adding hyaluronic acid, edelweiss and ultra-violet anti-brass pigments to keep cool tones from going brassy.

Which Kérastase range is best for thinning hair?

For thinning and hair fall, Kérastase offers Genesis (Aminexil, anti-fall), Densifique (Stemoxydine, density) and Spécifique (scalp and anti-fall). They sit close together and are easy to confuse, so we built a dedicated serum guide that breaks down exactly which one does what and who each is for — start there before choosing.

Which Kérastase range is best for dry hair?

Nutritive is the nourishment range for dry, dull hair. It's built around Irisome — a complex derived from iris rhizome — plus royal jelly and nourishing proteins to restore moisture and softness. If your dryness comes with structural damage or breakage, Résistance (Pro-Keratin and Ceramide) may be the better lead, with Nutritive layered for moisture.
