Your Water Is Damaging Your Hair. Here's the Professional Fix.

If your hair feels stiff, brittle, dull, and nothing you try seems to fix it — the problem may not be your hair. It may be what's in your shower.

Vancouver's municipal water supply is hard water. Hard water contains elevated levels of dissolved calcium and magnesium minerals — and wash after wash, those minerals deposit inside your hair shaft. Calcium buildup doesn't sit on the surface of the hair the way styling product residue does. It infiltrates the inner structure of the strand, filling the spaces where moisture and bond-repair actives should be. The result is hair that becomes progressively stiffer, more rigid, duller, and more prone to breakage — even with an otherwise good routine.

The problem is invisible until it's severe. Most people attribute the symptoms — stiffness that won't respond to conditioner, dullness that persists after washing, breakage that seems disproportionate to any damage they've done — to heat damage, ageing, or using the wrong products. They're not wrong that something is wrong. They're wrong about the cause. No amount of bond repair, deep conditioning, or protein treatment will perform at its potential on hair that is saturated with calcium deposits, because the calcium is physically blocking those actives from reaching the sites where they need to work.

Kerastase Premiere is the only professional system designed specifically to decalcify hair. Its dual-action technology uses Citric Acid to dissolve and remove calcium buildup from inside the hair shaft, and Glycine — an amino acid that penetrates the hair's inner layer — to reconnect the broken keratin chain links that calcium rigidity creates. The result is hair that is measurably stronger, softer, and more responsive to every other product in the routine. 99% stronger, 75% more shine, 93% less breakage in clinical testing.

Do You Have Hard Water Hair? The Signs.

Hard water damage is one of the most commonly misdiagnosed hair concerns. The signs are real — but they point to the wrong cause until you know what to look for.

Symptom

What Most People Think

What's Actually Happening

Hair feels stiff and rigid even after conditioning

Protein overload or wrong conditioner

Calcium filling the strand's internal structure, creating physical rigidity

Hair looks dull regardless of product

Damaged cuticle or wrong shampoo

Calcium deposits preventing light from reflecting evenly off the strand surface

Hair breaks more than expected

Heat damage or fragility

Calcium-weakened keratin chains snapping under normal mechanical stress

Bond repair (K18, Olaplex) underperforming

Wrong product or fake/diluted formula

Calcium blocking active ingredients from penetrating to the cortex

Color looks flat or uneven shortly after salon

Poor color application or fast-fading formula

Calcium interfering with color uptake and deposit (also see Metal Detox Hair page)

The Vancouver hard water test: Look at your showerhead or kettle. If you see white, chalky deposits or scale — that same mineral content is entering your hair with every wash. If you live in a building with older copper pipes, you have both calcium (hard water) and metal contamination. Première addresses the calcium. L'Oreal Metal Detox addresses the copper — see the Metal Detox page →

The 6-Step Premiere System: Decalcify, Repair, Protect

Kérastase Première is a complete 6-product system designed to work in sequence. The decalcifying step must come first — applying repair or conditioning products to calcium-saturated hair reduces their efficacy. Use the Concentré before shampooing on every wash day for the first four weeks. The system works cumulatively: results build and hold with continued use. Shop more Award Winning Products →

Kerastase Premiere Anti-Breakage Filler Mask

$100.00 CAD

Première’s anti-breakage filler is a rich mask for all types of damaged hair that repairs and rebuilds the inner strength of over-processed hair and protects against further breakage. Hair is stronger, and more beautiful.

While calcium is naturally present in hair, when hair is damaged it absorbs too much, leading to a calcium overdose. At this high level, calcium weakens the inside and the outside of the hair fiber. With its luxurious creamy texture, this decalcifying mask soaks into hair, delivering extra conditioning care to maximize hair recovery, particularly after chemical processing. A genuine hair savior, its dual action rebuilds the hair structure, smooths the surface, and radically reduces breakage, so hair goes back to its healthiest, strongest, most beautiful state.

Kerastase Premiere Serum Filler Serum

$89.00 CAD

Kérastase Première Sérum Filler Fondamental is a lightweight leave-in treatment for the inner repair of all types of damaged hair, leaving it glossy and supple.

Because of its increased porousness, processed hair absorbs 3 times more calcium from water than untreated hair, leading to a damaging calcium overdose which is visible inside and outside the hair fiber. Kérastase Sérum Filler Fondamental has a dual action: its light, balmy texture seals the cuticles to shield hair’s surface, while filling the fiber and reinforcing hair strength. Your hair is protected from the calcium damage of hard water, as well as from humidity, and heat up to 450°F. Frizz is eliminated, and hair is left smooth and supple, easy to style.

Hair is left stronger, and 4 times shinier. *

Why Vancouver Hair Has a Hard Water Problem

Metro Vancouver's water supply comes primarily from mountain snowmelt — which is naturally softer than many Canadian city water supplies. However, the journey from source to tap through aging municipal pipes, water treatment processes, and older building plumbing significantly changes its mineral content by the time it reaches your showerhead. Calcium and magnesium deposits in pipes dissolve into the water, and in older Vancouver buildings — particularly in the West End, Kitsilano, and Mount Pleasant — copper piping contributes additional metallic contamination.

The result is that Vancouver residents often have a combined hard water and metal contamination issue — calcium deposits from the water itself, and copper ions from the pipes. Kérastase Première addresses the calcium. L'Oréal Metal Detox addresses the copper. For clients in older Vancouver buildings who also color or bleach, using both systems is the complete protocol. For clients in newer buildings with PEX or plastic plumbing, Première alone is typically sufficient.

FAQ

Does Vancouver have hard water?

Yes — Metro Vancouver's water is classified as moderately hard by most measures, and significantly harder by the time it reaches the tap in older buildings due to mineral leaching from municipal pipes and building plumbing. Calcium and magnesium deposits in aging pipes dissolve into the water supply, and buildings with copper plumbing — common in Vancouver's pre-1990s housing stock in neighbourhoods like the West End, Kitsilano, and Strathcona — add metallic contamination on top of the mineral content. If you notice white chalky scale on your showerhead, kettle, or around taps, your water is hard enough to be depositing calcium inside your hair shaft with every wash. Kérastase Première is the professional system designed to remove that calcium and reverse the damage it causes.

What does calcium buildup in hair actually do?

Calcium from hard water penetrates the hair shaft during washing and deposits inside the hair fiber. Over time, these calcium deposits fill the spaces within the strand's internal structure — spaces that should contain moisture and keratin proteins. The result is hair that becomes progressively more rigid and stiff (the calcium physically hardens the strand), duller (calcium deposits prevent light from reflecting evenly off the cuticle), and more prone to breakage (calcium weakens the keratin chain links that give hair its flexibility and tensile strength). Calcium buildup also blocks the penetration of topical treatments — bond repair products like K18PEPTIDE™ (K18) and Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate (Olaplex) cannot reach the cortex sites where they need to work if calcium is occupying those spaces. This is why hard water hair often responds poorly to even high-quality professional routines — the treatments are being blocked before they can work.

What is Kérastase Première and how does it work?

Kérastase Première is a 6-product decalcifying and repairing hair system specifically designed to address calcium buildup from hard water. Its dual-action technology uses two primary actives: Citric Acid, which dissolves and removes calcium deposits from inside the hair shaft, and Glycine, an amino acid that penetrates the hair's inner layer to reconnect the broken keratin chain links that calcium rigidity creates. The system is applied in sequence — Concentré Décalcifiant pre-shampoo treatment first (applied to wet hair, left 5 minutes without rinsing), then the Bain Décalcifiant shampoo applied on top, then Fondant conditioner (fine to medium hair) or Masque (medium to thick hair), then the Sérum Filler leave-in, and finally the Huile Gloss finishing oil. In clinical testing, the system delivered 99% stronger hair, 75% more shine, and 93% less breakage. Results are cumulative and build with continued use — most clients see significant improvement within 2–3 washes.

How is Kérastase Première different from regular repair products like K18 or Olaplex?

K18 (K18PEPTIDE™) and Olaplex No.3 (Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate) are bond repair products — they reconnect broken polypeptide chains and disulfide bonds inside the cortex. Kérastase Première is a decalcifying and repairing system — it removes calcium deposits from inside the hair shaft before repairing the damage that calcium caused. These are complementary rather than competing products. If your hair has both calcium buildup and bond damage (common in bleached hair in hard water areas), the correct protocol is to use Première to decalcify first, then layer bond repair on top. Using K18 or Olaplex on calcium-saturated hair reduces their efficacy because the calcium physically blocks the actives from reaching the sites where they work. Première clears the pathway; bond repair products then work at full strength.

How often should I use Kérastase Première?

For the first four weeks, use the Première system at every wash — Concentré pre-treatment plus Bain shampoo, followed by Fondant or Masque depending on hair type, then Sérum leave-in, then Huile Gloss oil. After the initial decalcifying phase (approximately 4 weeks of consistent use), most clients can reduce to every second wash or 2–3 times per week while maintaining results. The Sérum Filler leave-in and Huile Gloss finishing oil can be used at every styling session regardless of whether you've washed. If you live in a hard water area and continue using unfiltered tap water, some level of ongoing calcium management is required — completely stopping the system will allow calcium to re-accumulate over time. A shower head filter can reduce the rate of calcium re-accumulation between treatments.

What is the difference between hard water hair damage and metal hair damage?

Hard water hair damage and metal hair damage come from water but are caused by different contaminants that require different treatments. Hard water damage is caused by calcium and magnesium minerals — they deposit inside the hair fiber and create stiffness, dullness, and breakage by physically hardening the strand structure. The fix is decalcification using Citric Acid and Glycine (Kérastase Première). Metal hair damage is caused by copper and iron ions — they penetrate the hair fiber and react with the oxidants in hair color and bleach, causing patchy color results, color shift, and color-reactive breakage. The fix is chelation using Glicoamine (L'Oréal Professionnel Metal Detox). In older Vancouver buildings with copper plumbing, both types of contamination are often present simultaneously. Première treats the calcium; Metal Detox treats the copper. For clients who color or bleach in hard water areas, using both systems is the complete professional protocol.

Is Kérastase Première safe for color-treated hair?

Yes. Kérastase Première is sulfate-free and color-safe across the full system. The Citric Acid in the formula is mildly acidic, which actually benefits color-treated hair by helping seal the cuticle and preserve color pigment — the same mechanism that makes acidic pH systems like Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate effective for color longevity. Première is particularly beneficial for color-treated hair because calcium buildup interferes with color uptake and accelerates color fade. Removing the calcium before or after color services allows the color to deposit more evenly and last longer. For blonde or bleached clients in hard water areas, Première before color services and L'Oréal Metal Detox before lightening services are the two professional pre-treatment protocols that most impact service results.
