Dry Hair Isn't a Conditioner Problem. It's a Barrier Problem.

Chronically dry, rough hair that doesn't respond to conditioning has a compromised cuticle barrier — moisture enters and exits freely instead of being retained. The solution is barrier restoration, not more conditioner.

Dry, rough, or straw-like hair is one of the most common complaints — and one of the most frequently mistreated. The instinct is to add more moisture. But if the cuticle barrier is open or compromised by heat, chemical processing, or mineral buildup from hard water, no amount of conditioner stays in. It absorbs immediately and the dryness returns within hours.

Kérastase Nutritive uses Endo-Médullium™ technology to restore moisture-retention capacity from within the cortex. Davines MOMO uses humectant actives to bind moisture into the hair shaft from the outside. Moroccanoil Treatment seals the cuticle surface with Argan oil. Used together as a system — or matched to the severity of your specific dryness — these address the barrier at every layer. At Zennkai, we've been matching Vancouver clients to the right dryness treatment for 40 years.

Not All Dry Hair Is the Same. Find Your Type.

NATURALLY DRY

Coarse, thick, or low-porosity hair types that are dry by nature

Hair has always been dry regardless of products. Wide strand diameter. Takes a long time to wet in the shower. Heavy, dense texture. Common in coarser, type 3–4 hair textures.

Fix: Heavy moisturizing system — Kérastase Nutritive Masquintense Mask weekly, Moroccanoil Treatment as leave-in. Sustained hydration, not repair.

ACQUIRED DRY

Hair was previously softer but dryness appeared or worsened after bleach, color, or sustained heat styling

Hair changed. Previously manageable but now rough and porous. Color fades faster than it used to. Dryness appeared or worsened significantly — after a service or period of styling.

Fix: Bond repair first (K18 + Olaplex), then moisturizing. Adding moisture to structurally damaged hair without bond repair delivers temporary softness but not recovery.

MINERAL-BLOCKED

Hair feels dry and coated despite correct product use. More common in Metro Vancouver's hard water

Products absorb immediately without softening. Hair feels coated after washing rather than clean. Conditioner and masks seem to have stopped working compared to when first used. Toner or color results become unpredictable.

Fix: Kérastase Première (Citric Acid + Glycine) monthly to remove mineral deposits, then standard moisture routine. The mineral layer is blocking everything else from working.

The Dry Hair Routine — Building Moisture That Stays

1

Cleanse Without Stripping

Kérastase Nutritive Bain Satin: Moisturizing shampoo that cleanses without stripping the cuticle's protective lipid layer. Available in two versions — Bain Satin 1 for normal-dry hair, Bain Satin 2 for dry to very dry hair.

Redken All Soft Shampoo: Argan oil-enriched, sulphate-free shampoo for dry, brittle hair. Adds moisture at the cleanse step.

Avoid: high-sulphate shampoos and clarifying shampoos on dry hair unless specifically removing mineral buildup (in which case use Kérastase Première first, then switch back to a moisturizing shampoo).

If products have stopped working, hard water mineral deposits may be blocking absorption. See Hard Water Hair Repair →

2

Deep Conditioner or Mask — Weekly

Kérastase Nutritive Masquintense Mask (Endo-Médullium™): The strongest professional moisture masque for severely dry, coarse, or undernourished hair. Uses Endo-Médullium™ to restore moisture-retention capacity from within the cortex rather than coating the surface. Leave 5–10 minutes, rinse thoroughly.

Redken All Soft Heavy Cream: Intensive moisturizing masque for dry or brittle hair. Softer texture than Magistral — appropriate for medium dryness.

Davines MOMO Hair Potion: Humectant-based intensive treatment that attracts and binds moisture into the shaft. B-Corp certified, ICEA organic. Good for medium-dry, fine-to-medium hair.

3

Leave-In Moisture Seal

Kérastase Nutritive 8h Magic Night Serum: Lightweight overnight leave-in serum that seals the cuticle and locks in moisture. Apply to towel-dried mid-lengths and ends. Or apply to dry mid-lengths and ends and leave-in overnight - no need to rinse.

Redken All Soft Mega Treatment: Leave-in gel-cream for very dry hair. Provides moisture and definition without weight.

4

Finishing Seal — Oil on Dry Hair

Moroccanoil Treatment (Original for coarse/dry · Light for fine hair): Applied to dry hair as a finishing treatment — seals the cuticle surface, adds high-gloss shine, and creates a barrier against atmospheric moisture exchange. 1–2 pumps on lengths and ends. Do not apply to root area.

Kérastase Elixir Ultime L'Huile Originale: Nourishing hair oil for all hair types. Apply to dry hair as a finishing serum or to damp hair before blowdrying.

FAQ

Why is my hair always dry even when I condition it?

Chronically dry hair that doesn't respond to conditioning usually has a compromised cuticle barrier — the outer protective layer of the hair shaft is open or damaged, so moisture enters and exits freely rather than being retained. Standard conditioner deposits a temporary surface coating but cannot seal a structurally open cuticle. The solution is cuticle-sealing actives, barrier-restoring treatments, and in Vancouver's hard water conditions, monthly mineral removal with Kérastase Première (Citric Acid + Glycine) to clear the mineral layer that blocks every product from working.

What is Kérastase Nutritive good for?

Kérastase Nutritive is the professional range for dry, rough, and undernourished hair. It uses Endo-Médullium™ technology to restore the hair's moisture-retention capacity from within the cortex — not just a surface coating. Masque Magistral is the intensive weekly treatment for severely dry or coarse hair. Bain Satin 1 and 2 are the daily moisture-retaining shampoos. The range is available at Zennkai — authorized Kérastase retailer with direct Canadian supply.

What causes dry rough hair texture?

Common causes of dry rough hair: high-sulphate shampoos that strip the cuticle's natural lipid layer with every wash; heat damage that lifts and roughens the cuticle scales permanently; chemical processing (bleach, colour, relaxers) that depletes the cortex; hard water mineral deposits from calcium and magnesium that roughen the shaft surface; and intrinsically low-moisture hair types. In Vancouver's moderately hard water, mineral buildup is a significant and frequently missed contributor that compounds all other causes of dryness.

Is Moroccanoil good for dry hair?

Yes. Moroccanoil Treatment uses Argan oil to create a film on the cuticle surface that reduces moisture exchange with the atmosphere and adds visible shine. Most effective as a finishing treatment on dry hair or as a protective layer before heat styling. For severely dry or coarse hair, Moroccanoil Treatment Original (not Light) provides the weight needed to smooth the roughened cuticle. Available at Zennkai — authorized retailer.

Does hard water make hair dry and rough?

Yes. Hard water calcium and magnesium deposits accumulate on the hair shaft and roughen the cuticle surface — making hair feel permanently coated and dry even after conditioning. Moisturizing treatments cannot fully penetrate through a mineral layer. In Vancouver's moderately hard water conditions, Kérastase Première (Citric Acid + Glycine) used monthly removes these mineral deposits and allows all subsequent moisturizing products to work significantly more effectively.

What is the difference between dry hair and damaged hair?

Dry hair is a moisture deficit — the hair lacks sufficient lipid and moisture content to feel soft and look shiny. Damaged hair is structural — the internal bonds and cuticle are physically compromised. Hair can be dry without being structurally damaged (naturally coarse or low-moisture hair types) or both dry and damaged (bleached hair is typically both). Dry-only hair responds well to moisturizing masques and leave-ins. Damaged hair needs bond repair (K18PEPTIDE™, Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate) first — adding moisture to structurally compromised hair without bond repair delivers temporary softness but not strength or elasticity.

What is the best deep conditioning treatment for dry hair in Canada?

Professional deep conditioning masques for dry hair in Canada: Kérastase Nutritive Masque Magistral (for severely dry, coarse hair — uses Endo-Médullium™ to restore moisture capacity from within), Redken All Soft Heavy Cream (intensive moisture for dry or brittle hair), Davines Momo Hair Potion (humectant-based moisture for medium dry hair, B-Corp certified). All available at Zennkai — authorized professional retailer with Canada-wide shipping.

Does Zennkai carry Kérastase Nutritive and Redken All Soft?

Yes. Zennkai carries the full Kérastase Nutritive range — Bain Satin shampoo (versions 1 and 2), Fondant Magistral conditioner, Masque Magistral intensive masque, and Serum Oleo-Relax leave-in. We also carry the full Redken All Soft range. Both are authorized, directly sourced from Canadian distributors. No grey market. Beauty with Benefits loyalty points apply to every purchase.
