Hair That Breaks or Feels Weak Needs Bond Repair — Not More Conditioner.

expert guidance from milajne, founder & president of zennkai — professional hair care across metro vancouver since 1984.

conditioner coats the surface. bond repair works inside the cortex where the actual damage is. they are not the same thing.

TIER 1

BOND REPAIR

Works inside the cortex to reconnect broken disulfide bonds and polypeptide chains. Applied after shampooing, before any other treatment. This is the intervention conditioner cannot replicate.

K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask

K18PEPTIDE™ — reconnects broken keratin chains in the polypeptide layer in 4 minutes. No rinse. Applied to damp hair after shampooing. The fastest visible repair available without a salon service.

Olaplex No.3 Plus Complete Repair Treatment

Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate — pre-shampoo weekly treatment. Reconnects disulfide bonds broken by chemical services. The structural foundation for bleach-damaged and chemically processed hair. 3–10 minutes before shampooing.

Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate 5-Minute Liquid Mask

Citric Acid + Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate — concentrated bond repair applied post-shampoo. Seals the cuticle at acidic pH while rebuilding bonds. 5 minutes weekly. Good everyday alternative to K18 for colour-damaged hair.

TIER 2

PROTEIN TREATMENT

After molecular reconstruction, protein treatments rebuild the structural scaffold of the strand — the keratin and ceramide layers that give hair its elasticity and tensile strength. Weekly, in place of conditioner.

Davines Essential NOUNOU Hair Nourishing Fast Mask

Keravis Plant Protein + Astaxanthin + ANTIFADE COMPLEX® — strengthens, repairs, and protects colour-treated and chemically processed hair. Reduces breakage from the first wash.

Joico Defy Damage Protective Mask

CoQuasome Technology + Moringa Seed Oil + Arginine — rebuilds strength bonds, reduces breakage, and seals the cuticle. Weekly treatment for damaged colour-treated and bleached hair.

Amika The Kure Intense Bond Repair Mask

Amika Bond Repair Technology + Sea Buckthorn — intensive weekly repair mask that rebuilds and reinforces broken bonds while restoring moisture, softness, and elasticity in chemically compromised and breakage-prone hair.

TIER 3

HEAT PROTECTION & SEAL

Seals the cuticle after repair treatments so what's been rebuilt stays intact. Applied to towel-dried hair before heat styling or air drying. The final step that makes bond repair last between washes.

Kerastase Resistance Blowdry Primer for Damaged Hair

Endo-Médullium™ + Heat Protection — leave-in milk applied before heat styling. Fortifies, thickens, and protects the strand. Reduces breakage during blow-dry and flat iron.

MoroccanOil Treatment

Argan Oil + Cyclomethicone — colour-safe finishing oil that seals the cuticle, reduces frizz from damage, and protects against UV and environmental stressors. 2–3 drops on wet or dry hair.

K18 HeatBounce Conditioning Heat Protectant

K18PEPTIDE™ + Heat Protection to 230°C — lightweight leave-in mist that protects against heat damage while continuing to reconnect broken peptide bonds with every application. The only heat protectant that actively repairs as it shields.

FAQ

Why does my hair keep breaking even with deep conditioning?

Conditioner works on the outside of the strand — it deposits emollients and proteins onto the cuticle surface to smooth and soften. Hair that breaks has structural damage inside the cortex, where the disulfide bonds and polypeptide chains that give hair its tensile strength have been fractured by heat, chemical services, or mechanical stress. Surface conditioner cannot reach or repair that damage. Bond repair technology — K18PEPTIDE™ (K18) and Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate (Olaplex) — penetrates the cortex and reconnects broken bonds from the inside. This is a different mechanism entirely. Deep conditioning alongside bond repair is beneficial, but bond repair must happen first. If your hair is breaking despite regular deep conditioning, bond repair is the missing step.

What is K18PEPTIDE™ and how does it repair hair?

K18PEPTIDE™ is a patented bio-mimetic peptide that matches the molecular structure of the polypeptide chains inside the hair cortex. When applied to damp hair after shampooing (no rinse), it penetrates the cortex and reconnects the broken polypeptide chains that heat, bleach, and chemical processing fracture over time. The result is measurable in the strand: elasticity returns (hair stretches and recovers rather than snapping), surface smoothness improves, and the hair responds normally to styling. K18 works in 4 minutes with no heat required. It does not replace conditioner — it is applied before conditioning and left in. Available at Zennkai across six Metro Vancouver locations at Canada's lowest professional prices.

Does bleach cause hair breakage?

Yes — bleach is the most chemically aggressive service hair can receive and is the primary cause of disulfide bond damage. Bleach works by oxidising the melanin pigment inside the cortex, but the oxidative process also breaks the disulfide bonds that give hair its structural strength. The more times hair has been bleached, and the higher the lift, the more extensive the bond damage. Signs of bleach-induced bond damage include hair that stretches significantly before snapping (rather than snapping cleanly), a gummy or mushy texture when wet, frizz that appeared after lightening, and colour that deposits unevenly. Bond reconstruction with K18PEPTIDE™ or Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate (Olaplex) is the clinical-grade fix. For bleached hair, bond repair at every wash — not weekly — is the minimum maintenance protocol.

What is the difference between K18 and Olaplex?

K18 and Olaplex both repair broken bonds but work on different layers. K18PEPTIDE™ targets the polypeptide chains in the cortex — the protein backbone of the hair. It reconnects in 4 minutes with no rinse, applied after every shampoo. Olaplex (Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate) targets the disulfide bonds — the sulphur-based links that create the hair's structural integrity. Olaplex No.3 is a pre-shampoo treatment applied for 3–10 minutes before washing. For heavily bleached or high-lift colour hair, both are recommended: Olaplex No.3 weekly as a pre-shampoo treatment, K18 after every wash. The two technologies address different layers of the same problem and work better together than either does alone.

How long does it take for damaged hair to recover?

Hair recovery from bond damage depends on the severity of damage and the consistency of the repair protocol. For mildly damaged hair using K18 after every wash and Olaplex No.3 weekly, visible improvement in texture and breakage reduction typically occurs within 2–4 weeks. For severely bleached or over-processed hair, 6–8 weeks of consistent Tier 1 bond repair plus Tier 2 protein treatment is a realistic minimum before texture normalises. The key variable is consistency — missing applications resets progress because damaged hair doesn't hold repair between treatments the way healthy hair does. Heat styling should be minimised during the repair phase. Further bleaching or chemical services should be paused until breakage stops.

Where can I buy K18 and Olaplex in Vancouver?

Can curl pattern come back after bleach damage?

Yes — in many cases. Curl pattern is determined by the shape of the hair follicle and by the disulfide bonds inside the cortex that hold the strand in its natural curl configuration. When bleach breaks these bonds, the curl pattern can loosen, straighten, or become inconsistent. Bond reconstruction with K18PEPTIDE™ and Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate reconnects these bonds, and for many clients, curl definition returns progressively over 6–12 weeks of consistent treatment. The degree of recovery depends on how extensively the bonds were damaged — some clients recover significant curl definition, others find the pattern returns partially. Pausing further lightening services during the recovery phase is essential.
