The third, tourmaline, usually isnβt a plate at all: itβs a mineral infused into ceramic or titanium to add shine and calm frizz.

Titanium is a metal, so it heats up almost instantly and holds a high, stable temperature. Thatβs a gift for dense or coarse hair that needs more heat to smooth or curl β you get the result in fewer passes, which counterintuitively means less cumulative damage than dragging a weaker tool through the same section five times. Itβs lightweight and glides beautifully, which is why so many professionals reach for it.
The flip side: titanium runs hot and transfers that heat aggressively. On fine or damaged hair itβs easy to overshoot into damage. If your hair is fragile and you still love a titanium tool, keep the temperature down and never linger.
Tourmaline β the shine-and-frizz enhancer

Hereβs the part that clears up most of the confusion. Tourmaline is a semi-precious mineral thatβs crushed and infused into ceramic or titanium plates. When it heats, it releases negative ions and far-infrared heat. So when a tool is labelled βtourmaline,β ask whatβs underneath. Tourmaline on a ceramic base gives gentle, shiny, frizz-free results for finer hair. Which one gives the smoothest, glassiest finish?
If pure shine is the goal, tourmaline-infused wins β the ion emission is what seals the cuticle for that reflective, βglass hairβ finish.
